Attars are oil-based fragrances, traditionally extracted through steam distillation and blended into a carrier oil rather than alcohol. Because there's no alcohol to evaporate the scent quickly, attars tend to sit closer to the skin, develop more slowly over the day, and last significantly longer — often 8 hours or more from a single application.

Perfumes (Eau de Parfum) are alcohol-based. The alcohol carries the fragrance further, giving perfumes better initial "throw" or sillage — meaning people around you notice the scent sooner. They also evolve faster through their top, heart, and base notes since alcohol evaporates quickly.

Neither is objectively better — it depends on what you want. Attars suit people who prefer a personal, long-lasting scent that doesn't overwhelm a room. Perfumes suit those who want a fragrance that announces itself and layers well with clothing.

Attar is concentrated, so a little goes a long way. Apply to pulse points — wrists, behind the ears, the base of the neck, and inner elbows — where body heat naturally helps the fragrance open up over the day.

Apply attar to slightly moisturised (not wet) skin. Dry skin doesn't hold fragrance oils as well, so a light unscented moisturiser beforehand can noticeably extend wear time.

Avoid rubbing your wrists together after applying — this breaks down the fragrance molecules and can make the scent fade faster and smell different than intended. Dab, don't rub.

Reapplying isn't usually necessary with a good attar, but if you want the scent to carry longer into the evening, a second light dab in the late afternoon works well.

Most eau de parfums are built in three layers that reveal themselves over time. Top notes are what you smell in the first few minutes — usually light, bright ingredients like citrus or bergamot that fade within 15–30 minutes.

Heart notes (or "middle notes") emerge next and form the true character of the fragrance — often florals, spices, or fruity accords. This is what most people associate with the scent, and it can last a few hours.

Base notes are the foundation — deep, long-lasting ingredients like musk, sandalwood, amber, or oud. These are what remain on skin or clothing hours later, and often what determines whether you'd want to wear that fragrance again.

Attars, being oil-based and single-note or simply blended, don't always follow this three-stage structure as distinctly — one reason they can smell more consistent from application to the end of the day.

Fragrance smells slightly different on everyone because it interacts with your natural skin chemistry, body temperature, and even diet. What smells incredible on a friend may develop differently on you — this is completely normal.

A good starting point: think about how you want to feel, not just what you want to smell like. Oud and amber lean confident and grounding; florals like rose and jasmine feel romantic and soft; citrus and fruity notes feel fresh and approachable.

Occasion matters too. Lighter, fresher scents (citrus, musk) work well for daytime and office wear. Richer notes (oud, amber, spice) suit evenings, winter, and special occasions where you want the fragrance to make more of a statement.

Alcohol-based perfumes use ethanol to carry and disperse fragrance oils quickly — that's what gives them their initial "spray" projection. But alcohol also evaporates fast, taking a portion of the fragrance with it, and can feel drying on sensitive skin.

Alcohol-free attars use a carrier oil instead, which evaporates far more slowly. This means the fragrance releases gradually over many hours rather than all at once, and tends to be gentler on skin — a reason many people who find alcohol-based perfumes irritating switch to attars.

Alcohol-free formulas are also commonly preferred for religious or personal reasons, particularly for wear during prayer.
